Checking the Cat's Pedigree  –  Danish Leopard 2 A5 DKs  are a  Breed  Apart

Denmark's  Leopard  2 A5 DK was ordered from the outset with the lessons of the Gulf War in mind. Turret drives and gun stabiliz- ation are all electric, avoiding heat build-up from hydraulic pumps as in the Leopard C2. An electrical generator runs turret systems and an air-conditioner.  The 2 A5 DKs also have APUs for "silent running/engine off ".

In choosing a '2 A5 upgrade  rather than the latest '2 A6  standard,  the Danes decided to forgo long  L/55 120mm guns. This provides Canada with an opportunity  to compare the Dane's short L/44 guns with longer guns of leased Leopard 2 A6Ms. Were Afghanistan to reveal any downside to that long gun, the purchased  CF Leopard 2s could keep L/44s.
