Canada in Afghanistan – Allied Armour in Southern Afghanistan  –  January 2008

An Overview of  Denmark's Afghan Deployment of Leopard  Tanks.
Canadian Forces Helped. Why no Government/DND News Release?

Kn Hundevad's overview is not significant to Canadian readers for the details of the Danish deployment per se,  interesting though they may be. Rather  it  is the relative openness with which the Danish military is willing and able to discuss its overseas operations and engage- ments with Denmark's citizenry.  Contrast this with the Canadian government's approach ...

Denmark's 2 ESK  (Second Tank Squadron) has now deployed to Helmand and seen action. In March 2007,  the squadron and  the Hærens Kampskole (HKS, the Combat School ) completed a joint Fact-Finding mission in Helmand to clarify details for a possible deploy- ment. This FF mission also gave the team a chance to talk with Canadian tank crews.  The Canadians deployed  their Leopard C2s in November of 2006 and were [at the time of writing ] busy upgrading to the new Leopard 2A6M CAN.

Checking the Big Cat's Pedigree  —  Danish Leopard 2A5 DK tanks  are a  Breed  Apart

The Danish military has released an account of  an engagement with the Taliban in Helmand Province which involved British and Danish infantry as well as Danish Leopard 2A5 DK tanks. This was a minor engagement but it was well-run and successful from ISAF's point of view. The Taliban were not able to successfully close with either of  two infantry units and  finally  exposed themselves  to direct  tank fire.

This report was released  (with illustrations)  within one week of  the clash.  The author is a Danish military press officer but  he manages to avoid  Canadian-style  positive spin  along with  the excessive operational security concerns which obsess CF public affairs officers. When explaining  Canadian  involvement  in Afghanistan, rarely is anything said plainly.

In choosing the Leopard 2A5 upgrade (rather than the latest  Leopard 2A6 standards, the Danes had decided to forgo long L/55 120mm guns). This provides Canada with an opportunity  to compare the Dane's short  L/44 guns with the longer guns of  leased  Leopard 2A6Ms. Were combat experiences in Afghanistan to reveal any downside to that long gun,  CF Leopard 2A4s  (bought from the Netherlands) could retain their L/44 main gun.
