Current Danish Naval Projects – May 2008
An Overview of Current, On-Going Danish Naval projects
2005-2009 Standard Mk II Naval Patrol Cutter & SAR Vessels — the Diana
class
Danish Navy Coastal Surveillance and Search and Rescue — the Standard Mk 2
Diana class
Six Standard Vessel Mk II – or Diana class – will be built for surveillance (including
environment patrol), search and rescue, explosive ordnance disposal, sovereignty patrols,
assistance to civil authorities, etc. These standard flex patrol craft are intended to replace 8 old
Barsø patrol cutters.
The six Diana class are traditional 43m semi-displacement boats. An aft ramp is provided for a rigid
inflatable boat (left, the inboard RHIB is powered by a 200 hp diesel ). A single standard flex container can be
carried (originally two container slots were intended, but one was sacrificed for the rear ramp). The glassfibre hull
is built by Sweden's Kockums Karlskrona Varvet. [1] The hulls are transferred to Faaborg Værft A/S, the
Danish prime contractor for outfitting and delivery to the Danish navy after they are fitted with their propulsion
systems.
The engines are refurbished diesel engines (some
from decommissioned Flyvefisken class ships, other found second-hand in Sweden). The MTU diesels
are powerful and give the Diana class a respectable top speed of 25 knots. The Flyvefisken engines had
relatively low hours on them and re-using these diesels saved the Danish navy on spares and training, as well as on
overall costs.
FMT (Forsvarets Materieltjeneste – DALO, the Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization) lists a
Diana class budget (inclusive of costs for consultants, training and spares, RHIBs, etc.) of 283M Kroner
(about $47.75M at 1999 price levels). This amounts to about 50M Kroner (or $8.42M in 1999 dollars) for each
completed Diana class vessel, an economical purchase by any standard.
The Diana class hull is ice-strengthened to 10 cm (maximum). The Diana class is bigger than the
old Barsø class (more than half again longer and displacing over 30 tonnes more) but the Diana
class has a smaller complement (9 vs 11) due to automation and is also twice as fast (25 vs 11
kt ).

[1] This Swedish yard helped the Danish navy formulate the glassfibre sandwich building system for the
Flyvefisken class 20 years ago. This construction know-how was originally transferred to a Danish yard
– Danyard – which no longer exists. But using these techniques to build the new
Standard Mk I and Mk II demonstrates the navy's positive experience and faith in the
materials.

cutters that the Diana class are to replace.
