Armoured  Vehicles in Afghanistan – Study of Casualties – Aug 06/Feb 2008

Hard Numbers  – CF Afghanistan Casualties by Vehicle Type

Stephen Priestley,  Researcher,  Canadian American Strategic Review
Canadian Forces Vehicular Casualties in Southern Afghanistan by Vehicle Type

The following is a listing –  by vehicle type – of  the Canadian Forces’ vehicular casualties in southern Afghanistan from Oct 2005 to the present.  ( The same list  is available arranged in chronological order.) These two lists cover CF fatalities (named) and  woundings/injuries (unnamed, details often remain unpublished ).

At the end of each vehicle type section, there is a brief summary of the number of incidents, casualties, and the cause of those casualties. Note that, in the summary, no distinction is made between the wounded and the accidentally injured. Causes of casualties is broken down by IED, RPG, and accidents. For simplicity sake, IED covers all forms of improvised explosive devices – roadside bombs, vehicle-borne IEDs, and landmines (many of  which are stacked, augmented, or  just homemade).

Notice: this page will not be updated. DND now rarely releases the vehicle type(s) involved in attacks.  The intended purpose of  this excessive secrecy is unknown. Certainly local  Taliban observers will have an idea of  the vehicle types involved. Canadian citizens, on the other hand, will not. Hardly a hearts-and-minds success.
