Night Vision Equipment  –  Finger Lights  –  MERX NPP  –  May 2010 Follow the Bouncing Ball ... or DND Encourages Finger-Pointing: Night Vision Finger Light MERX Notice of Proposed Procurement As the name suggests, a 'Finger Light' is a miniature flashlight worn on the index finger. The light emitted is compatible with night-vision goggles and  the like. Generally, a toggle on the side switches the light on and off, making finger lights a relatively  'hands-free' source of  discrete spot illumination for map reading. Finger lights have their origin in ANVID (Aviators' Night Vision Illumination Devices ) used to provide additional cockpit lighting without disrupting flight crew use of NVGs. Obviously, a compact, short-range light would be highly useful for ground forces too. Like most small, LED flashlights, fighter lights tend to use 1.5 volt COTS alkaline batteries (LR44 / SR44) to power their LED bulbs. The differences between various makes of  finger light is usually the thumb-operated on-off  toggle switches (single or ambidextrous),  filter types for the LED bulb ( NVG, IR, low light, etc.), and dimmer switches (for more exposed use and to extend battery lives).
