Night Vision Equipment – Finger Lights – MERX NPP –
May 2010
Follow the Bouncing Ball ... or DND Encourages Finger-Pointing: Night Vision Finger Light MERX
Notice of Proposed Procurement
As the name suggests, a 'Finger Light' is a miniature flashlight worn on the index finger. The light emitted is
compatible with night-vision goggles and the like. Generally, a toggle on the side switches the light on and
off, making finger lights a relatively 'hands-free' source of discrete spot illumination for map
reading.
Finger lights have their origin in ANVID (Aviators' Night Vision Illumination Devices ) used to provide additional
cockpit lighting without disrupting flight crew use of NVGs. Obviously, a compact, short-range light
would be highly useful for ground forces too.
Like most small, LED flashlights, fighter lights tend to use 1.5 volt COTS alkaline batteries (LR44 / SR44) to power
their LED bulbs. The differences between various makes of finger light is usually the thumb-operated on-off
toggle switches (single or ambidextrous), filter types for the LED bulb ( NVG, IR, low light, etc.), and dimmer
switches (for more exposed use and to extend battery lives). The Canadian Forces want 300 units of the
finger lights but no delivery date is specified in this NPP.
