Leopard C2 Main Battle Tanks – MERX – CF
Procurement – March 2008
Replacement Parts for Leopard C2 MBT
(Main Battle Tank): Radiator Cores — MERX Notice of Proposed
Procurement
Operational conditions in Afghanistan chew through tank components – new Leopard 2 A6Ms need track pads and road
wheels (both ground away by the rocky soil) and older Leopard C2 tanks go through lubricating systems due to fine Afghan "moon dust"
plus cooling system components in the temperatures and altitude of the summer in Kandahar.
With the increased training tempo back in Canada, the rest of the Leopard C2 fleet is also suffering
from additional wear-and-tear. To prepare tank crews for Afghan operations, these tanks are routinely put
through their paces in Alberta and Texas. This NPP is just a sample of the flurry of MERX Notices
for Leopard spare parts.
The NPP is a simple order for 50 cores for Leopard C2 radiators. Like all model 1A5
Leopards, the C2 has twin radiator cores (left), one per hull side straddling the engine compartment. DND
adds an option for 100 additional radiator cores. If the option was filled, this would be enough cores to refit all
active Leopard C2s.
A Leopard C2's radiators move 160L of coolant. The Leopard rads work in stages dictated by
coolant temperature. Stage 1 starts at tempuratures over 90° C. Stage 2 kicks in at 98° C (normally with
the engine running at 5000 rpm). Under the Afghan sun (and at higher altitude), obviously those temperatures
will be reached sooner.
