CANSOFCOM Forklifts  –  Special Forces Vehicles  –  MERX NPP  –  March 2009

Deployable 16K 4x4 Rough Terrain Forklifts and Non-deployable
10K 4x2 Forklifts  for  CANSOFCOM  Special Forces  –  MERX NPP

DND is requesting  four  forklifts and, ordinarily, that would be of  little interest.  However,  these vehicles are for special forces. Two different  types of  forklift are required: one is a deployable 16K  RT, a vehicle with 4x4 mobility  over  rough terrain and a  5440 kg  (16,000 lb) capacity.  The second type is a non-deployable 10K forklift, a 4x2 with a 4525 kg  (10,000 lb) capacity. Rough terrain use was downplayed  for the  4x2 but  pneumatic tires  suggest a degree of  off-pavement use.

Large, out-of-warehouse forklifts are nothing new to the CF, of course – Liftking's LK35C RTCH Rough- Terrain Container Handler of  16,000 kg is widely used.  Nor are smaller RT  forklifts unusual in FOBs. What makes those four CANSOFCOM  forklifts stand out  is that they are a stand-alone procurement.  The question is:  why special forces forklifts?

One intriguing possibility is that the forklifts are at least partially related  to the upcoming Special Forces Vehicle selection. One candi- date,  the Supacat Jackal,  can be  modified into a 6x6 with handtools and a 10K  forklift.
