EOTech Weapons Sights – MERX – CF Procurement –
Feb / May 2008
EOTech M553 HOLOgraphic Weapon Sights [ SU-231/PEQ ] MERX NPP Notice
Update: A second NPP for 265 SU-231/PEQs (with option on 100 more) has
been issued. The text of this second NPP notice is reproduced below the first
notice.]
This Notice of Proposed Procurement is for 100 x rifle sights similar to a type already in service. For
several years, the Canadian Forces have been using EOTech 550 series holographic sights as Close Quarters
Battle backups to the standard issue C79 magnifying sights. The current order is for the specific model of
EOTech sight approved for US Special Operations Command – hence the use of the US
SU-231/PEQ designation. [1] The sights are for use on C7A2 rifles and C8 carbines.
EOTech's HOLOgraphic Weapon Sight (or HWS) uses laser technology to mark a target with a reticle pattern.
In a sense, the HWS is a 'heads-up display' for rifles – essentially similar technology being use to
display targeting information to fighter pilots in aircraft cockpits. In both cases, the image is
projected onto a viewscreen of hardened glass. This avoids the depth perception problems of magnifying
lens.
A key advantage for weapons sights is inherent in the nature of holographs. If any portion of the
screen is obsured – or even badly damaged – the image is projected onto any clear section
of the viewscreen. Screen brightness can be adjusted quickly to handle varying light
conditions (such as entering a dark building ) and, in night vision mode, the HWS can be used in
tandem with the CF's helmet-mounted NVG night vision goggles.
The NPP specifies EOTech's "part #553.A65/1, tan colour" – ie, the HWS 553.A65 TAN or the
Model 553 in desert tan (until now, CF EOTech sights have all been in police-style black finish). To suit US
Socom, the SU-231/PEQ has a sealed optical cavity for submersion to 20m although this is irrelevant to the
CF Afghan mission.
[1] In any case, there's been a general trend towards adopting official US military designations
for newly-acquired CF equipment (eg: M777 lightweight howitzers).
