Bv206 MOSV or SUSV – Parts Procurement – MERX NPP –
June 2011
What's in a Name? – Bv206: a 'Small Unit Support Vehicle' or a Medium Over-Snow Vehicle? Notice of Proposed Procurement
The CF's Bv206 Medium Over-Snow Vehicle is an articulated
tracked vehicle consisting of two cars working in unison. At one point, CF Bv206 NTVs (Northern Terrain
Vehicle) were going to be built in Calgary. Instead, the Mulroney Conservatives cancelled that plan and bought 78
Bv206 MOSVs from Sweden. The MOSV were delivered between 1983 and 1985 and, commercially, are refered to as Bv206 D5
indicating their 5-cylinder diesel power.
This NPP is entitled SUSV SPARE PARTS and specifically requests five NSN 2815-01- 375-6838 engines. That NATO
Stock Numbers is for the Mercedes-Benz OM603A, an inline 6-cylinder diesel that's quite different from the MOSV's
inline 5-cylinder OM613. So why is DND buying replacement engines for US Army M973 SUSVs or
Bv206 D6s?
The CF's Bv206s came to notice when they deployed to Kandahar in 2002. Has DND quietly taken on stocks of the
6-cyl. SUSVs for commonality with US forces? Or, more probably, have CF MOSV stocks been bolstered by the
addition of a few used Bv206s? The question then is: Why not Bv206 D5s for commonality? Both the D5 and D6 are
commonly available in Canada as Swedish surplus.
Perhaps it was a simple question of 'needs must' and immediate availability. If so, the SUSVs were
probably bought through DND's Bv206 Repair & Overhaul provider.
Not a bad approach to filling the gaps. But why are there gaps in a fleet of vehicles with a vital place to fill?
The Bv206 goes places no other CF vehicle can. And, as mentioned, the Bv206 is readily available on the surplus market
including refurbished, upgraded variants. Perhaps it's time to consider closing all MOSV gaps with modernized
Bv206s.
For the record, crated ex-US Army OM603 engines sell in the US $24-to-$25,000 range. The edited SUSV Spare Parts NPP
is reproduced below [ note Contracting Authority].
