Armoured Vehicle Upgrade – MERX – CF Procurement –
March/July 2008
Ballistic Curtains for Bison – Extra Protection for MRT/MRVs But is this an Inside or an Outside Job
? MERX NPP Notice
Update: Apparently there were no respondants to this NPP. On
07 July 2008, the notice was re-published unchanged other than a new closing date of 05 Aug 2008.
This NPP covers mounting brackets to attach 'ballistic curtains' in
Bison armoured vehicles re-roled for MRTs (the Mobile Repair Teams) and for the
MRV ( the Mobile Recovery Vehicle).
A ballistic curtain can be an adjunct to spall liners ( left) protecting the inside of armoured
vehicles. But, ballistic curtains are also hung in lighter vehicles to protect crews. Could this be
applied to the Bisons?
Ballistic Curtains – Spall Liner Business as Usual or a New Trick for Old Kit?
The crews of MRTs and MRVs are often exposed as they work. With the rear ramp down, the interior of the vehicle is
open to hostile fire. While 'curtains' may be something of a misnomer for panels of aramid fabric,
envisioning the rear of a Bison protected by these kevlar sheets isn't that difficult. Since this NPP
Notice lists existing NATO stock numbers (NSNs) for the installation kits, it is more likely that
the 'ballistic curtains' are simply adjuncts to existing spall liners (perhaps disrupted during the
re-roling work).
Thanks to new CASR contributor, Simon Wilson, for the heads up on this
Notice.
