CP-140 Aurora Modernization  –  DND/CF News Release  –  December 2007

Continuing the Aurora Incremental  Modernization  Program?
In Sept 2007, DND announced  the cancellation of its Aurora Incremental Modernization Project. But by 18 Dec 2007, another revised plan was revealed. The 10 best CP-140s were to be 'life-extended' with AIMP Phase III equipment  to bridge the gap until CP-140 replacements enter service. In Sept of 2008, improved  "surveillance  capabilities"  were added.

Armed Naval Icebreakers (A/OPS)  –  DND/CF News Release  –  10 July 2007

Armed Naval Icebreakers – the Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships

On 09 July 2007,  Prime Minister Stephen Harper had announced a plan to procure 6-to-8 new armed naval icebreakers. Dubbed  Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship, or AOPS, these light vessels would replace the "heavy armed icebreakers"  promised  during  the  2005-2006 election campaign while trying to fill a long-standing Canadian offshore patrol vessel requirement. Neither of these roles  –  Arctic or  OPV –  are particularly sought after by Maritime Command.

Open Skies Treaty  –  DND/CF Backgrounder  –  Arms Control  –  March 2006

The Treaty on Open Skies and the SAMSON Observation Pod

DND and  the CF released a Backgrounder on the 2002 Open Skies Treaty.  Canada was an early  pro- ponent of  the Open Skies  concept.  Some mention is made of the SAMSON sensor pod  (SAMSON is
the rather awkward acronym for Lockheed Martin's "Special  Avionics  Mission  Strap-on  Now"  pod).

Coastal Defence –  Canadian Coast Guard –  CCG Procurement  – March 2007

CCG Mid-Shore Patrol Vessels and Fisheries Research Vessels

The CCG defines 'Mid-Shore Patrol Vessels' as "medium sized patrol vessels of ... 37- 42 metres which operate up to 120 nautical miles offshore. These vessels carry one or two [ RHIBs ...] and have accommodation for two fisheries or police officers. The main use [ for MSPVs is]  maritime security and fisheries enforcement". The MSPV (and the OSFV) are, in effect, the small end of  the Offshore Patrol Vessels  (OPVs).

[ Update: 28 Feb 2009 – See  PWGSC press release and a MERX  NPP for the MSPV.]
