Defence Research  –  MERX  –  CF/DND Procurement  –  March  2008

MovieCat  TS   Miniature  Helicopter   —   MERX  ACAN Notice  Mini-Helicopter  for  Research Use  by  Defence R&D Canada

Defence R&D Canada-Ottawa intends to buy a single RC mini-helicopter. What DRDC-Ottawa intends to do with this remotely-controlled aircraft  –  beyond doing research, obviously – isn't revealed. This ACAN lists DRDC's specifications developed around the German- made MoBB  ( Modellbau Bremer ) MovieCat TS mini- helicopter. As the MovieCat name implies, the aircraft carries a digital camera stabilized in 3-axes on its nose.

The MovieCat TS  is finely engineered  but of  quite simple construction. The fuselage is of the pod-and- boom type. 'Fuselage' is something of a misnomer – a central pod contains the turbine engine, fuel tanks, etc. The rest of  the structure is attached to that pod. Twin forward  booms hold the gimbals for the digital camera. A single, braced rear boom supports the tail and  tail rotor  –  including its belt-driven drive shaft.

The engine and main rotor mast are a self-contained unit (right). This  two- stage turbine, the SPT5H, is made by another German firm, JetCat. [1] The fuel  tank sits below this powerplant. The basic structure of the MovieCat TS was derived from  MoBB's earlier PowerCat TS,  a  large toy helicopter intended for use by RC hobbyists.[2]

Since DRDC has released no information about their intended use of its MovieCat, we can only speculate about  possible uses for this  RC helicopter. The most likely employment is as part of DRDC-Ottawa's on-going investigation of  Future Forces Synthetic Environments (FFSE). Alternatively – but less likely – MovieCat TS may be  DRDC-Ottawa's contribution to the  planned Navy shipboard UAV simulation.
[1] This tiny engine is only 37 cm long and weighs 4470g  (peripherals add another 550g). The SPH5 generates 8 kW of power and its retail price from JetCat is 4990 €.

[2] At  least one  PowerCat TS  is operated  in the Ottawa area – perhaps inspiring the choice by  DRDC-Ottawa.  As noted  in the ACAN, the sole  Canadian supplier for the MovieCat TS is the Edmonston, New Brunswick-based Eastern Helicopters
