This Background Index covers Canadian
Forces weapons types, projects, and procurement. Emphasis will be on CF crew-operated weapons – or their
remotely- controlled weapons station equivalents. Vehicle-based systems (other than crew operated weapons or RCWS)
will be covered under artillery, vehicles, or projects.
Note: Individual projects/weapons type are listed by subject, not
chronologically.
Background — CF Weapons / Weapons Project Articles Index
Canadian Forces SARP 2 ( Small Arms Replacement Project II )
CRR new Canadian Ranger Rifle
The Canadian Ranger Rifle (CRR) is intended to replace
the 65-year old .303" Lee-Enfield No4 MkI* with a new bolt-action rifle (chambered for .308" Winchester) for the
Canadian Rangers.
Land Force Crew-Operated Weapons Projects
C16 CASW (Company Area Suppression Weapon)
CASW was that drawn-out project to choose a sight- integrated automatic grenade launcher (AGL) firing a programmable
projectile. We reviewed candidates but DND has chosen the C16 based on the German GMG AGL. The C16 CASW
will not enter service until after the end of the combat deployment to Afghanistan.
Artillery Projects ( See BG
Artillery sub-index page for more detail )
The Future Indirect Fire Systems Project
Is associated with MAVS (above) but little has been heard of that project of late. Has the purchase
of 155mm howitzers opened the possibility of a large-calibre SP again?
Naval Projects ( See BG
Navy sub-index page for more on naval projects)
Remote Control Heavy Machine Gun (RCHMG)
Project
The RCHMG Project is intended to provide Navy frigates and MCDVs with a close-in defence system which can be operated
under protection ( from weather and hostile fire ) unlike the current, exposed, crew-operated
machineguns.
