This Background Index covers Canadian
Forces artillery projects and procure- ment covered in this section. This is not intended as a comprehensive
listing of the Canadian artillery park (which primarily consists of towed 105mm howitzers) nor does it
address current CF efforts to address Direct Fire Support capabilities.
For articles examining technology and procurement issues relating to Direct Fire Support and DND/CF Direct
Fire Support project developments, see Projects ).
Note: Individual artillery projects/types are listed by subject, not chronologically.
Background DND / CF Project Articles Index
Artillery Procurement
The BAE M777 155mm Towed Howitzer
The M777 was one of the Nov. 2005 IOR orders and a conspicuous success. In late December 2006,
CP reported that options on 6 more M777 howitzers had been filled.
Artillery Projects
The Long Range Precision Rocket System
DND's LRPRS project calls for 17 new MRLS multiple rocket launcher systems – launch & reload
vehicles, missiles, associated equip- ment, In-Service Support, and training, etc.
MAVS Mobile Artillery Vehicle System Project
Until the 155mm howitzers were rush-ordered for Kandahar, CF artillery was focused on improved
targeting and mobility through the MAVS project mounting the C3 on an MLVW replacement truck.
The Future Indirect Fire Systems Project
Is associated with MAVS (above) but little has been heard of that project of late. Has the purchase
of 155mm howitzers opened the possibility of a large-calibre SP again?
Future Indirect Fire Systems ( FIFS ) Project
A review of the LAV III-based 105mm self-propelled guns often put forward as alternatives to MAVS
DNDs proposed truck-based 105mm C3 howitzers.
