Canadian  Forces    —    Naval  Vessels  and  Equipment

•  NAVY  –  SMALL SHIPS AND FLEET AUXILIARIES

Overviews of  Candian Forces Auxiliary Vessels and other CF small ships appear below. The specific vessel type pages have been removed due to lack of interest. [ Note: sideviews of vessels shown below are  not  rendered to a constant scale.]

YTR  Tug  –  Fire Class
Though classed as a tug, the Fire class are really a dedicated fire and rescue boat with three nozzles to spray water or foam. One YTR  (Firebird)  is based at Halifax , the other YTR (Firebrand) at Esquimalt.

Towboats (Tugs) : the Canadian Navy currently has three classes of harbour tugs in service –  light Ville YTLs,  medium Tillicum YTM, and  heavy Glen YTB tugs.

YTL Tug – Ville Class
There are 5 x Ville class Light  Harbour Tugs (or YTLs), two in BC, three on the East Coast. Ville class tugs have bollard pulls of  up to  7.5 tons.

YTM Tug – Tillicum  is a lone Medium Harbour Tugs (YTM) based at Esquimalt. Tillicum displaces 140 gross tonnes. Bollard pull is 16 tons ahead; 10 tons astern. Tillicum is propelled by twin Kort nozzles.  In contrast with the Ville class which have steerable Kort nozzles, the YTM's nozzles are fixed  ( it steers with rudders ).

YTB  Tug  –  Glen Class
Two Glen class YTBs or Heavy Harbour Tugs are based in BC, three in NS. Like the smaller  YTL tug, the open sea performance of  the Glen tug  is limited but the YTB excels within protected harbours. Their max bollard pull is 19 tons

Diver Recovery & Diving Tenders
Diver recovery is handled by rigid hull inflatable boats and aluminum jet boats. There are two classes of diving tenders –  the medium YDT 11/YDT 12 Granby and  the larger YDT Sechelt / Sooke conversions.

YDT Dive Tenders
YDT  11  and  YDT 12 Granby  ( called D.T. 11 and D.T. 12 sometimes) are two medium-sized diver tenders. YDT 11 is based at Esquimalt (Colwood) and the Granby at  Halifax.

YDT Sechelt and Sooke  are two diving tender coversions of Sechelt class TSRV Torpedo Sound Range Vessels found to be surplus to Nanoose Bay range needs.

TSRV – the Sechelt class
The Sechelts are purpose built vessels intended for use at the Maritime Exper- imental and  Test Ranges, Nanoose Bay, BC. Two of the four TSRVs were later converted as FDU YDTs.

YAG 300  Training Boat
Yard Auxiliary, General is the generic term  for what became dedicated officer and cadet training boats. Other wooden YAG 300s became YFB  ferry boats. YAGs will be replaced by the new Orca class PCTs.

PCT  –  the Orca Class
The Orca class PCT are just entering  service as YAG 300  replacements. Primarily training boats, "Patrol  Craft, Training" will  include occasional sovereignty patrol duty as (and when) required.
