Leopard 2, Leo 2 - based Support Vehicles, and the
Tank Replacement Project
The Leopard 2 is a revised, updated, and more powerful evolution of the earlier CF Leopard C2 tank. The
first of the new series to enter Canadian service were the 20 Leopard 2A6Ms in Afghanistan on loan from
Germany. The Leopard 2A6M tanks were accompanying by ARV 3 Büffel recovery vehicles.
These Leopard 2 vehicles serve alongside earlier Leopard C2s, Badger ARVs, and
Taurus engineer vehicles.
Replacing the CF's Leopard 1-based armour and those loaned vehicles in Afghani- stan is the object of
DND's Tank Replacement Project. A first step in this TRP was the purchase of 100 ex-Netherlands Army
Leopard 2s. Refurbishment of the used tanks has proved difficult (only five upgraded Leopard
2A4M CANs will be ready before the CF combat mission ends in Afghanistan). Contracts are yet to be signed for
Force Mobility Enhancement – covering combat engineering aspect of the TRP.
