First-Generation Canadian Leopard 1 Tanks Article Index
 |
Despite media attention to later-model Leopard 2 tanks, most of Canadian Forces heavy armour is made up
of members of the earlier Leopard 1 family. The updated Leopard 1A5 tank is designated Leopard
C2 in CF service. Fifteen of these tanks were deployed to Afghanistan to provide direct fire support. (The
deployed tanks have extra add-on armour protection. Some sources list them as C2A1s or C2A2s).
Leopard 1-based support vehicles include Badger Armoured Engineering Vehicle (AEV), Taurus
Armoured Recovery Vehicle (ARV), and Beaver Armoured Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB). All but
AVLB are to be replaced with Leopard 2-based vehicles under the Force Mobility Enhancement and Tank Replacement Projects.
