Canadian Forces – Armoured Heavy Support Vehicle System Variants |
|
Note: At the end of
the CF combat mission in Afghanistan, all Armoured Heavy Support Vehicle Systems will go into storage in Canada.

Specialty Role AHSVS – Tricky Tranformers
Like the CF's standard HLVW heavy trucks, the Armoured
Heavy Support Vehicle System series also features wrecker recovery and tractor trailer variants. Of the 82
AHSVS in total, [1] only five recovery vehicles and 12 tractors were bought. The latter are to tow
new transporter trailers for Leopard 2A6M and Leopard C2 tanks plus any other Canadian Forces vehicles too
heavy for a conventional trailer. These AHSVS trailers are also used for light vehicles as well. [2]

Heavy 'Wrecker' – the AHSVS Recovery
Armoured Heavy Support Vehicle System 'wrecker ' recovery vehicles basically have the same chassis
as standard, cargo carrier AHSVS trucks. However, as expected in a military recovery vehicle, its
upper body is essentially a travelling tool chest. The bob- tailed rear features the usual stinger towing gear for
disabled vehicles (up to the weight of a LAV III) as well as a hook for tow bars.

Panzertransporter – AHSVS Tractor Trailers Take a Load Off
Both the wrecker recovery vehicle and the tractor have the same LMT protected cab as the cargo AHSVS truck. Crews
are further protected by reducing the need to exit the vehicle in the field by having remote oil and tire
pressure checks, air conditioning, and coolers for potable water and food. The AHSVS tractor chassis
differs slightly from the other vehicles – tractors are shorter and have different rear wheels for some reason.
Transport trailers are marvels in their own
right and are described on a separate page.
